6/12/2023 0 Comments The deep novel alma katsuRegardless of the actual historical facts, the events have become mythologized. The sinking of the Titanic (and, to a lesser extent, its sister ship, the Britannic) occupy a very specific place in the public imagination. But it seemed like a grand challenge, and I love a writing challenge. It’s so well-known and held in such esteem by so many people that you risk displeasing some of them, no matter what you do with the story. There’s arguably no greater disaster in most people’s minds than the Titanic so it seemed the logical thing to tackle, though daunting. Not to sound too callous but it’s got to be the right disaster, to have the right elements for a novel (mystery, adversity, challenge, and triumph it can’t be all doom and gloom). What drew you to the sinking of the Titanic and the Britannic?Īfter The Hunger, the natural question was what big disaster will you turn to next? But answering this is harder than it appears.

They each describe how they would kill the much-despised Colonel Protheroe all except Miss Marple, that is. In the evening, Miss Marple joins Anne, Lawrence, the vicar Leonard Clement, the vicar’s wife, Griselda, their nephew, Dennis, and the curate Hawes at the vicar’s house for dinner. Miss Marple agrees to have lunch with Protheroe’s unhappy wife, Anne. Mary Mead gather after church to gossip about numerous things, including the possible indiscretions of Protheroe’s daughter, Lettice, who, apparently, is shacking up with artist Lawrence Redding, and a missing one-pound note from the collection jar. Murder at the Vicarage concerns the murder of Colonel Lucius Protheroe, a man so despised that multiple people confess to the crime after the fact. Although it's not marketed as a young adult book, it has teen appeal, and it's been adapted into a film that many teens will see. The two main characters learn a lot from each other, especially about opening yourself up to different ways of thinking, but many - especially in the disabled community - have found the portrayal of Will and his point of view problematic, since he's presented as feeling that life isn't worth living if you're disabled. Will is facing a serious decision about his condition, and Lou, his hired caregiver, tries her best to get him to make the choice everyone else wants. Parents need to know that Me Before You is about an unlikely relationship between Louisa, a working-class British woman, and Will, a quadriplegic living at his wealthy parents' estate. 6/12/2023 0 Comments Bitter by akwaeke emeziThat said, on its own Bitter is a great book tackling difficult topics. It is interesting to get a window into Bitter's backstory and how the city got to where it is in Pet. So for people new to these books, I would pick this one up first or space them out. It's also uncomfortable to immediately read about a younger version of an adult abuser. If I hadn't read them back to back I may not have noticed just how different the tone and voice feel. All of which makes sense for the story being told, but it's definitely a jarring change from Pet which is darkly whimsical and almost reads like a middle grade novel at times. I read this directly after reading Pet and thus was struck by how different it felt- more mature, more concrete, more like a YA novel with relationship drama, miscommunication, and teens drinking and getting high. There is a lot to like here though I'm still sorting out how I feel about this book. This is a book about protest, mental health, art as activism, and violent versus non-violent resistance. It's also quite a different book, both thematically and stylistically. Bitter is a prequel to Pet, though you don't need to have read Pet to pick this one up. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Forbidden Area by Pat FrankAfter the success of Alas, Babylon, Frank concentrated on writing for magazines and journals, putting his beliefs and concerns to political use, and advising various government bodies. His fiction and nonfiction books, stories, and articles made good use of his years of experience observing government and military bureaucracy and its malfunctions, and the threat of nuclear proliferation and annihilation. Adam launched his second career as novelist and independent writer, Frank spent many years as a journalist and information handler for several newspapers, agencies, and government bureaus. Before the publication of his first novel Mr. "Pat Frank" was the lifelong nickname adopted by the American writer, newspaperman, and government consultant, who was born Harry Hart Frank and who is remembered today almost exclusively for his post-apocalyptic novel Alas, Babylon. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Julia quinn first comes scandalFirst comes scandal, then comes marriage. Her many good points have been submerged in an avalanche of criticism. Her private life has been racked by scandal it has been a catalogue of unhappy, unfulfilled and unsuitable relationships. Yet her nature, as one intimate has put it, "was to make everything go wrong." She has been described as tragic, unresolved, a royal maverick, a woman of conflict, a princess without a cause. As second in line to the throne for many years, Margaret was born with every possible advantage - beauty, vivacity, intelligence, wealth and position. Was Princess Margaret a royal rebel or the victim of an unfulfilling station? Whatever conclusion we draw, she remains arguably the most interesting member of the British royal family. 6/10/2023 0 Comments Paris by paris hilton perfumeThe right fragrance is the perfect finishing touch for every outfit, which is something we know better than anyone.
