Those who care about high English society in the play spend a good amount of time commenting on Ernest, or others of lower classes who they deem unrespectable societally. One of them, Ernest, a bachelor who dines expensively but “cannot pay” for such endeavors in the city and often falls ill, and Jack, who is a reserved and responsible caretaker in the countryside. The plot of this play revolves around the maintenance of two identities by one man: Ernest and Jack. I particularly noticed this in the way the lower classes are commented on by the upper (English) classes in The Importance of Being Earnest.” In a great deal of his pieces Wilde confronts the issue of class, and in our more recent classes we have been especially focused on how Englishness and Irishness fits into this conversation with class identity.

Mack eventually attended seminary in Australia and then moved to Oregon, where he reunited with his mother and sisters, married a woman named Nan, and settled down. After running away, Mack traveled the world and fought in a war, though Young does not know which. Mack was born in the Midwest, but he left his family home at the age of thirteen because his father was an alcoholic who abused his wife and children. Young (who goes by Willie in the book) is a close friend of Mack, having known him for over twenty years. In the Foreword, William Paul Young writes directly to the reader, giving information he has gleaned about Mack's early life and explaining why he will be the one telling the story (rather than Mack himself).
